Wow! An excellent week of weird again. Glad you were able to escape the chill temperatures here and hope you had a nice vacation.

Those houses on the lake look absolutely bizarre. They will need some major repairs for sure.

Light Pillars! Another very cool thing to see.

Ok, serious question, but 50% rhetorical. Why, why, why do people not try to first find a mundane explanation for odd phenomena before going all “woo” on it? Christmas show lights would have been my first thought. Is it that hard to try to guess something obvious before guessing something virtually impossible? And even the laziest bit of sleuthing would likely have corroborated the spotlight conclusion. Sigh!

Now, the drumfish thing, ok, that’s really strange and cool. I would not have known their noise-making ability would be so pronounced. That’s wild.

My last comments. Today I learned that the Obamas have a production company. Nice. And that company is willing to produce a movie about a debunked story from decades ago. Not nice. Why do we do these things?

Great collection this week. Happy New Year!

Re: rhetorical question -- I think it's really hard to imagine how other's brains work when they are steeped in pop culture lore and they aren't in the habit of critical thinking. I see an awful lot of people who get through life with their primary knowledge derived from what they see in the media. They don't have any ability to think through a situation and find a solution. It seems that's what might be happening with the jump to woo. People also want their lives to be exciting and to feel special, so they grab on to the magical explanation.

Thanks for being a great supporter and reading each week. Happy New Year to you too!

I think you’re right about people getting so much of their primary knowledge from what they see in the media. And I’ll add my thought that said media is far too often put out there by people who lack critical thinking skills as well.

I so wish that public schools would teach critical thinking in some manner but I know they’d never be able to. I mean we’re back to banning books so there’s really no hope for actual critical thinking.

Unrelated: I was trying to think of my favorite stories from this year (really difficult because there have been so many really great ones). One that has stuck with me because I am a big lover of dogs was from the beginning of the year where a dog led people to a car that had gone off the road. Story was awesome. Then came the part where we learned that the driver was intoxicated and crashed. Still, it just made me happy to see a canine companion doing that. I’m hoping my German Shepherd would show similar behavior should the need arise. She’s pretty sharp.
